| Instrumental/acoustic rock from USA, latest full-length album released in 2012.
John William Lowery (born July 31, 1971), best known by the stage name John 5, is an American guitarist. His stage name was bestowed on him in 1998 when he left David Lee Roth and joined the Industrial Metal group Marilyn Manson as their guitarist, taking over from Zim Zum. Still going by the name "John 5," Lowery is currently the guitarist for Rob Zombie. He is also a solo artist having recorded six guitar albums: Vertigo (2004), Songs for Sanity (2005), The Devil Knows My Name (2007), Requiem (2008), The Art of Malice (2010) and God Told Me To (2012), as well as a remix album, Remixploitation (2009). He also works as a staff writer for Chrysalis Records, working with artists such as Matt Ball, Avril Lavigne, Rob Halford, k.d lang, Garbage, Meat Loaf, Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, FeFe Dobson and has written and recorded with southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
John 5 At MySpace
With his newest solo album John 5 (AKA John Lowery) proves once again why the title of guitar virtuoso has been bestowed upon him by so many of his peers. Entitled "God Told Me To", this latest effort aims to showcase all the technique and blistering shred guitar that John 5 has become known for.
"God Told Me To" is John 5's sixth solo studio release (seventh overall including 2009's remix album "Remixploitation" ) and consists of 10 instrumental tracks including a cover of Michael Jackson's 1983 hit single "Beat It". Featuring shred guitar in place of the original vocals this remake is one of the highpoints of the album.
Surprisingly, "God Told Me To" eschews John 5's trademark shred meets rockabilly sound in place of some interesting takes on acoustic guitar style. All in all the album ends up being half heavy guitar shredding and half acoustic songs ranging from country inspired soloing to folk style finger picking to even a full on Flamenco style guitar approach ("Noche Acosador" ).
While relatively unknown to the bulk of today's mainstream audience John 5 has had quite an impressive career dating back to late 1980's. His resume includes playing alongside some of the biggest names in rock and metal history consisting of such greats as Lita Ford, David Lee Roth, Rob Halford, Marilyn Manson, and most recently with rockstar turned film director Rob Zombie.
"God Told Me To" features some phenomenal musicianship by John 5 but as a whole just doesn't seem up to par when compared to his previous solo albums. There are certainly more than a few moments where his brilliant technique shines bright. Unfortunately, there are also moments where the album seems to lack the polish of his previous efforts. Luckily enough, the good outweighs the bad and it is an album that should be heard by all, especially fans of guitar music. With his incendiary playing he is sure to inspire as well as frustrate guitarists everywhere.
